Casey Affleck/Chance The Rapper (12.17.2016)

Okay, here's my review. This show well exceeded my expectations and I got more out of it than I was expecting to. Casey Affleck was an enjoyable host despite only being known for dramatic roles and projects. He gelled well with the cast and the writers actually seemed to know how and when he could've been best used best. Sure, the writing was a little uneven and a lot of recurring premises got dug out of mothballs when they shouldn't have been, but hey...there have been worse Christmas shows in recent memory. Aside from Pete (who I hope is doing well if he isn't in rehab), Melissa (who is most likely not going to make it to the end of the season at this point), plus Leslie, Cecily and Mikey (which is very unusual for both of them at this point) the cast was pretty evenly balanced for airtime. Let's break it down shall we?

Another Trump Christmas - This was probably their strongest post election Trump piece. Kate and Alec were fine but really didn't give us anything new and weren't really the focus of the sketch. Beck put his Putin impression to his best use yet here. It was nice to see SNL finally start to get a firm grasp on tbe Russian hacking/interference scandal. Goodman as Rex Tillerson was a bit of out-of-the-box stunt casting and he was great here as well. It's alsk encouraging to see SNL start to go after Trumps' cabinet more and more each week rather than focusing all their energy on making Trump and KellyAnne look even more clownish (as if they needed SNL's help in that regard). Still, seeing Goodman make a cameo I couldn't help but wonder why HE wasn't hosting instead of Casey Affleck. Yeah, his last hosting stint wasn't all the great, but come on! He certainly deserves another chance! B-

Monologue - This didn't instill a ton of confidence in me for Casey Affleck as a host at firstt. He handled it well enough, but he seemed a little out of his element and the material meandered quite a bit. The true highlights were the Baldwin/Goodman walk ons and his stomping on the musical numbers. Kenan as Black Santa felt too tacked on for my liking. Also, I couldn't help but wonder why Casey had a full beard when every other (male) host in recent memory has had to be clean shaven. Did he actually need this for another live action film he is shooting currently and work it out with Lorne? Something tells me he may not be used much in this episode and this is going to be another episode that is densely packed with cameos. C+

Dunkin Donuts - This ad was funnier than it had any right to be mostly due to the efforts of Casey and this season's male featured players. Sure, it must've been the obligatory attempt at Boston humor considering the host is named "Affleck", but it worked nonetheless. B+

Robotic Worker Presentation - Was there a point to Armisen being a part of this sketch? I guess he's got a new penultimate season of Portlandia coming out next month to promote. Plus, Seth Meyers still has a show and still employs him and I guess SNL was lucky enough to catch him when he wasn't taking time off from it. I guess his presence here was appropriate enough since this whole sketch felt like a throwback to his Era of prominence as a cast member as it was blatant gay humor run into the cold, cold ground withour taking a second to think of what more they could trim fron this. If they were trying to make a statement on political correctness, they failed. I have to give credit to Casey, Kenan and Aidy here as they really played off of their surroundings well. Beck looked like he just walked off the set of a 1994 Duracell commercial and Kyles' wig looked like it was applied in too big of a hurry. C-

Jingle Barack - While this was clever, something felt strange about its execution. I realize it's a riff on Run DMCs' "Christmas in Hollis, Queens" but was it really that necessary to give a very 1986 aesthetic to something so obviously set in 2016? Anyway, a lot of individual jokes worked in spite of this. Plus, this was a decent use of Chance The Rapper outside of the musical guest slot but he didn't really seem like he was giving it his all. Adding Leslie as a Salt-N-Pepa-alike MC was an inspired touch. C+

Christmas Miracle - I don't see why they needed to recur this a third time in only two seasons but at least this, much like a lot of Kates' recurring sketches has a great streak of absurdist writing to it and is performed as reliably well as always. Plus, it's not totally a bad thing that the law of diminishing returns really helps reduce the corpsing. I'm tempted to say this sketch is becoming the next Debbie Downer but this sketch warrants return installments much more than Debbie Downer ever did. By this point in the show, it became pretty obvious that Casey's beard wasn't a big if an issue as Lorne may make it out to be with other hosts either because they wrote his parts around it or it was just incidental to every sketch he was in.  C+

Update is improving ever so slightly. They still have plenty of good material. Jost is still on a bit of a hot streak and Che is making the best of what he is given. The lone commentary really killed this one. We didn't need to see Fred and Vanesas' "friends from growing up" bit anymore but they were both in the building during a week when Russia was in the news again so we should've seen this coming. I thought that they might have been planning to take this in a different direction when they mentioned Putin being a fan of Che but I spoke too soon. C+

New York Now - This Long Island nativity scene was possibly the weakest live segment of the night. It had Anderlette written all over it and it felt very derivative. It felt like a pinch of Coffee Talk, a teaspoon of Bronx Beat and a dash of Affleck chanelling Kroll and Mulaney in "Oh Hello" baked into a thin bare Nativity sketch premise crust with other attempts at lame regional NY type humor. Chance The Rapper didn't quite fit into this sketch at first but then having him drop a Hammer reference seemed oddly appropriate. . Plus, it felt like this was Cecily's first appearance of the night (which is strange at this point in the show) and if Mikey's part was what this was building up to, it was too weak of a payoff.  D+

Hillary, Actually - This really pulled it's weight. The electoral college angle was topical enough to justify writing it (speaking of which, I'd be shocked if this wasn't a Kelly/Schnieder joint) and enough bizarro-Zuckeresque sight gags with the fold out cards and giant check to justify filming it rather than doing it live (they did this exact same thing in a live sketch with Pete and Amy Adams that got cut from dress two years ago). This was surprisingly enjoyable with what they added to it. B-

Christmas Bar - This sketch was a little repetitive and predictable and shticky for my liking but it was more watchable than it really had any right to be. I liked how they kept upping the stakes and adding to this. Normally, you could only see this type of "wild building on a trope" sketch on the recently departed Comedy Bang! Bang! IFC series but it worked surprisingly well in this setting. Casey performed his part well even if it wasn't too much of a stretch from the Boston role he played earlier. C-

Mrs. Claus And The Elves - I'm sure this is a bad sign, but I saw where this sketch was going the very second it started. I was hoping that it would be a little different since "Mrs. Claus" was the focus but I ended up hating myself for being right. This was definitely the most unwelcome recurring segment of the night and Casey Affleck was the host who added the least to it. It dragged on, but at least the ending was swift and abrupt.  D-

Now, for my updated rankings of this season...

1. Dave Chappelle/A Tribe Called Quest
2. Tom Hanks/Lady Gaga
3. Lin Manuel Miranda/Twenty One Pilots
4. Margot Robbie/The Weeknd
5. Emily Blunt/Bruno Mars
6. John Cena/Maren Morris
7. Casey Affleck/Chance The Rapper
8. Emma Stone/Shawn Mendes
9. Kristen Wiig/The xx
10. Benedict Cumberbatch/Solange

Well, that was as good a note to end 2016 on as any. Next month, SNL rings in the new year with Felicity Jones as their first new host. I can't say I've seen her in anything big just yet, I've heard good things about her acting and can say with some confidence that I am looking forward to this episode. See you then!

John Cena/Maren Morris (12. 10.16)

Okay, here's my review. In spite of itself, this show is definitely the strongest out of all the episodes that have aired since Chappelle hosted last month. John Cena performed exactly as well as I had expected as a host. He showed a lot of commitment and strong comedic energy. He was obviously psyched just to be there and gelled well with the cast but at the same time, he didn't always make his presence known. Obviously, this was through no fault of his own. It seems the writers only used him in the two ways they knew how; in either hunky guy roles or big dumb athlete roles. Unfortunately, not every sketch calls for that role and Cena felt out of place in those types of sketches when he was placed in them to fill a straight man role that any other male cast member or host could've easily handled. Cena was just shoved into the background in sketches that didn't call for him getting to play himself. Of course, this was on top of the fluctuations in this episode's writing quality. Cena was one of the seasons better hosts when he was visible He met my expectations more than the writers did. Aside from Pete, Sasheeer Alex and Melissa the cast was pretty evenly balanced tonight. Anyway, let's break this down.

The Lead w/Jake Tapper - This was very well executed despite being a slight variation on the commonly observed theme among Trumps' cabinet picks. Becks' Jake Tapper was serviceable here but Kate may have to find a new angle on KellyAnne Conway. The Bryan Cranston cameo was great and they wrote great lines for him. I especially liked the retconned Mr. Whites' death on the series into a faked suicide just for this sketch and worked in the LFNY rather than just tacking it on like they have been doing. B-

Monologue - This was a lot of fun despite being a little predictable. Bobby, Kenan and Leslie were great at cutting promos. Cena gelled really well with them and set a great tone for the rest of the show. B-

Hook A Hunk - This MTV dating game sketch was a little uneven, but overall I liked how they handled it. They could've played down Cena and Cecily's parts, but they knew exactly when to embellish Mikey, Beck and Kyles' parts and end the sketch there. C+

The Karate Nerd - This parody was another uneven piece that worked despite it's flaws. Cena played his role so big that it became obnoxious by the end. Kenan played his role well, but they could've trimmed down the penny training flashback. I kept waiting through the buildup of what I expected to be a bloody, Farewell, Mr Bunting/Wake Up And Smile type payoff but seeing Mikey get knocked out of his pants Charlie Brown style through five walls was just cute and cartoonish enough to work. C+

U. of Alabama Science Class - This sketch was funny despite feeling like it tread on a slightly overdone trope for SNL. Cena had the best lines with his dopey banana speech and his delivery really sold them. Beck, Aidy and Kenan played theit roles well. Mikey, Bobby and Vanessa were competent straight foils but mostly felt like furniture here. B-

Dyke and Fats Save Christmas - This seemed like the ultimate "worked-best-as-a-one-off" sketch. Aside from the Christmas theme and the "broads" line near the end, they may not have changed enough to justify a retread. C-

Update was pretty weak tonight. I was a little disappointed with the way they handled this weeks' Trump/CIA/Russia news. I don't know if it's because I've seen too many other takes on this story or if it's because it's one of those stories that has implications so scary that they're beyond satire. The only jokes from Jost and Che that landed were the short form and Black Santa material. It was nice to see Kates' Angela Merkel again even though it felt like too much more of the same. Shockingly, the strongest part of Update was Cecilys' return as Cathy-Anne as this character dovetailed nicely with her topic. This is why I think the writing really justified this as she had some strong "alt-right" slams and the only jab at Trumps' SNL tweets. Possibly the weakest Update of the season so far. D+

Where'd Your Money Go? - This was genuinely the funniest piece of the night to me. It was definitely the thing I genuinely laughed the most at, but it could've been shorter. It also had the strongest writing (at least dialogue and viewpoint wise) and they really played to the cast strengths impression-wise. It was nice to see Kenans' Charles Barkley make a return although something seems different about that impression. It seems like he has reverted it back to whem he first debuted this impression in the 07-08 Bon Jovi episode opposite Kristen Wiig as Bjork mixed with a little of his Steve Harvey for goid measure (since it is a game show sketch after all). Cena was cast well as Gronk. Physically, he was perfect for the role but I can't really judge the accuracy of the impression beyond that. Bobby was perfect as Jon Daly and Alex was serviceable as Connor McGregor. Kudos to him for getting a third notable impression on the show (which is sadly more than the show can say for Melissa Villasenor who SPECIALIZES in impressions). Sadly, at this point it might just spell the end for both of them after this season. If I had to guess who may have written this, I'd have to guess that it was Micheal Che for a couple of reasons. First of all, this does seem like the closest thing to his style out of everything live that aired tonight. Secondly, I have to think Che must've been pretty excited to write something for John Cena this week. Before he deactivated his Twitter for a second time, he was pretty good at responding to people. When I asked him who HE may want to see as SNL host, he responded "I think John Cena would be dope." Since Che got his wish, I'm guessing if they collaborated on something that aired, this has to be it (if Jost or someone else didn't write this).
B+

Through Trumps' Eyes - This was a clever filmed piece. They actually improved upon common complaints on Trumps behavior. It was strongly reminiscent of the "Reagan Directs" sketches from the Ebersol years. My only real complaint was that the ending seemed a little rushed. This had to be another Julio Torres piece because it was a short film that resembled Melania Moments from earlier this season (which we now know he wrote) and it's just surreal enough to be his. They did make decent use of Cena dressed up as Trump in this, so kudos to whoever predicted that. B-

Joanne and the Christmas Tree - This sketch felt like it ran out of steam at too pivotal of a moment. It started out seeming like it was going to be fairly ambitious in terms of writing and staging for what it was but it felt pretty one note in the middle and Cena felt almost wasted here. Thankfully, they were able to bring it to it's logical conclusion even if this also felt a little rushed. C-

Erotic Bookstore - This sketch seemed to go on without any real point. Sure, it was Cena's part was written to his physical strengths, but aside from Kenans' clumsy exposition it just seemed to go nowhere. Beck and Vanessa were a welcime addition but Melissa was wasted in a small straight tole that didn't require her to draw on her repetiore of impressions. Maybe it was another one of those more female oriented sketches that will receive a lot of female praise online but to me it was the weakest segment of the night. D-

United States Of Talent - This sketch was just a mess (both literally and figuratively). The bulk of it felt like an overly long and elaborate buildup to a very season 20-ish punchline. The only thing this had going for it was Kenans lines at the end criticizing the owl. C-

Now, for my updated rankings of this season…

1. Dave Chappelle/A Tribe Called Quest
2. Tom Hanks/Lady Gaga
3. Lin Manuel Miranda/Twenty One Pilots

6. John Cena/Maren Morris
7. Emma Stone/Shawn Mendes
8. Kristen Wiig/The xx
9. Benedict Cumberbatch/Solange

Well, that was that. Next week, Casey Affleck makes his hitting debut. Given the choice between the two Affleck brothers, Casey would not be my first choice to host the Christmas 2016 episode of SNL. In fact, given the choice for musical guest, this may be the most inappropriate lineup for a Christmas show since Jeff Bridges/Eminem, Lil Wayne episode from 2010. Still, I go into it with an open mind since knowing he could surprise us and turn out to be adept at sketch comedy despite seeming to have more of an affinity for dramatic acting and directing. See you soon!

Emma Stone/Shawn Mendes (12.3.2016)

Okay, here’s my review. This episode was completely indistinguishable from either of Emma Stones’ previous two shows in terms of quality. Sure, she still gives it her all and she’s still a talented sketch performer in her own right, but something still seems missing. I don’t know if it’s just the lack of energy, but it’s almost as if they still don’t know how to use Emma to her full potential. Granted, she may be working with a different cast and a different writing staff this time (each with their own different sensibilities) but I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same. Still, it was considerably better than the previous live show since it relied less on unwelcome recurring material. The cast seemed balanced tonight, but things may not be looking so great for Melissa Villasenor as it’s two weeks until the Christmas show and we have yet to see anything of genuine substance from her. Anyway, let’s just get right into it…

Trump Tweets – This cold open felt a sort of unfocused, derivative and just slightly toothless. Maybe it's because I'm not completely up on the Trump/16yrold/Twitter story or maybe it's because jokes about Trumps' miniscule attention span feel a little down the beaten path (or maybe it's because it was a little too close to their last cold open) but this one wasn't without it's redeeming moments. Kate and Bobbys' parts were the funniest. Alec had great “build the swamp/drain the wall” lines. Kenan and Alex had good inauguration lines and I liked the Grim Bannon the most. C+

Monologue - This have been her best out of the three she's done so far. It was subtle, revealing and poignant. It didn't blatantly retread any other monologue and it took us backstage for a bit and made us wonder a bit more about whether Leslie's relationship with Kyle us as real as her “relationship” with  Jost. Vanessa, Aidy and Bobby had the best lines and Becks' barely missed hug was funny. B-

Woodbridge High School Theater Showcase V - The high school theater showcase may have felt like lather/rinse/repeat by this point but Emma Stone really added something to this. Plus, Kenan and Vanessa had their best comebacks yet. C+

Christmas Candle – This short was pretty unremarkable. It just felt like they put "Wishin' Boot" and "Neurotology" in a blender with a tiny pinch of Sump'n Claus and Egg Nog for good measure and poured it through a strainer to remove "Wishin' Boot"s' air of mystique. D+

Posters - This was a big waste. It felt too much like a jokeless '09-'12 Era sketch for my liking. Everyone pulled their weight but Emmas' Character was too obnoxious and shouldn't have been the focus of the sketch. She played a role that would be WAY better suited for Wiig, Abby, Vanessa or Nassim. In fact, it was like every single one of all of their performances smashed together. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this got cut from the previous shows’ dress rehearsal. The payoff was all right but just wasn't worth the buildup. D-

The Hunt For Hill – This was a little underwhelming. Essentially, it was a joke that social media had beaten to death by the time SNL had come back from Thanksgiving break but fleshing it out and executing it as a sketch didn't do them a tone of favors. They kinda stretched themselves too thin with this one and showed that it wasn't totally worth the effort of the execution. C-

Update felt a little lopsided tonight. Either Che was having a real off night or Jost just happened to get all the best material. Leslie's commentary was pretty middle of the road for her but the mascot riffs and mirror instructions were worth a few laughs. The Rachel commentary served its purpose of drum rolling the Aniston cameo. While it went down like almost every other impersonator-meets-subject cameo in SNL history, it was one of the least wasted cameos in recent memory. B-

Cleaning Crew - This was better than it had any right to be. I did appreciate the strangely oversexualized nature of the Santa songs and the scattershot nature of the reactions. Also, it seemed strange that this sketch was Cecily's first live appearance so late in the show. If this was obligatory Anderlette sketch of the night, I have to give them props because it was less loathsome than everything else they've ever written. C+

Paley Center Screening - I could certainly tell where this was headed right away. While I'm still not all that into this new Kate character I have to say I liked this installment much better than the original from the season premiere as she had much better material. It's good to see the same level of acerbic writing is here. Also, while Kate was the main focus of this sketch it was a wasted opportunity as far as Leslie self-cameos are concerned. B-

Fischer-Price Wells For Boys - The well sketch was quite enjoyable despite not being "ha-ha" funny. I'm willing to bet that Julio Torres wrote this. It smacks of his style even though it's more coherent and straight forward than the rest of his work. B-

Nativity Scene – While this wasn’t the most inventive premise in the world or anything, Kyle played his part very well as did Emma. Also, Emma played her part EXACTLY like Cecily would have. It's almost like this sketch was originally written for her but was cut from previous seasons' dress rehearsals. It makes me wonder if this was just resubmitted for Emma or why couldn't Cecily have just done it instead. C+

Now, for my updated rankings of this season…

1. Dave Chappelle/A Tribe Called Quest
2. Tom Hanks/Lady Gaga
3. Lin Manuel Miranda/Twenty One Pilots
4. Margot Robbie/The Weeknd
5. Emily Blunt/Bruno Mars
6. Emma Stone/Shawn Mendes
7. Kristen Wiig/The xx
8. Benedict Cumberbatch/Solange

Well, that met my minimum expectations. Next week, John Cena makes his hosting debut. I know Cena has had the necessary acting and comedy experience (in both film and TV) to make a great host (much like The Rock who also successfully graduated from wrestling to do what Cena has been doing). Plus, I have no doubt he will bring a fresh, much needed energy to the show. Given this months’ SNL lineup, I’m predicting this will be the strongest show of the two remaining this calendar year. See you then!

Kristen Wiig/The xx (11.19.2016)

Okay, here’s my review. While this episode WAS a considerable letdown from last week with Chappelle, it wasn’t quite as big a letdown as we were expecting. This was, by far, the most uneven show of the season thus far but only the second worst. By and large, this was comparatively better than Wiigs’ previous hosting stint from three-and-a-half years ago (which was surprisingly more recurring character heavy than this one). Two things this show did have going for it were a different cast and writing staff from that time and a few unexpected cameos from much beloved figures to at least front load the show with (however brief and underutilized they were). Plus, pretty much the entire cast got some airtime (even if the senior established players got more). Quality wise, this show started out fairly strong with some degree of promise but then started to sputter too soon and almost completely spun out well before the end. Let me show you what I mean…

Donald Trump Prepares - This cold open, if nothing else, does show us how nicely they bounced back from the election. Baldwin had good lines as Trump and Kate played off him brilliantly. Mikey didn't add much but Bobby and Beck each had great material. Nice to see how seamlessly they worked in some Hamilton material at the last minute. It was nice to see Sudekis as Romney again and he got his laughs and got out but that felt like a real wasted opportunity for him. Also, the bit with Googling Isis felt down the beaten path. C+

Monologue – This got off to a slow start but really picked up once they started working the entire cast (and some writers apparently) into the mix. The cameos from Steve Martin and Will Forte were also a welcome addition (at least they got more to do than Sudekis). C+

The Bubble - This was well written and executed but didn't feel entirely original. Still, it did a fine job of poking fun at the deep cultural divide and borderline ideological hypocrisy in this country that really decided this election. B-

Secret Word - This was the first truly unwelcome addition of the night. Kenan as the host was worth a few chuckles and I like that they tried to work in some backstory to Hader's character (along with a voice mail from the man himself). Thankfully, that's all they relegated his role to because if they did get him to travel to NY just for this, THAT would be the biggest waste of all. Cecily played a role well suited for her. Unsurprisingly, she played it way too big but she did look damn good doing so. The rest of this was just a carbon copy but at least they knew when to end it. D+

Anderson Cooper 360 - This had some shades of 04-05/09-10 Era writing to it but at least it built up to a worthwhile payoff and was well performed. It was also a decent jab at CNNs' reporting and the way they worked in the Westworld reference was clever. B-

Target - This was another clever piece that seemed to be well suited to Cecily and Aidys’ acting ranges and written from a fresh-for-SNL angle. I appreciated how they managed to wring some more topical humor from a rather unlikely place. It did remind me a lot of the Hometown Thanksgiving tourism ad from the Jeremy Renner 2012 episode but that was written in a COMPLETELY different time. B-

QVC Auditions – This piece was something I didn't quite know what to make of. It showcased the typical hammy Wiig/Cecily performances I don't typically care for but it seemed to go in different directions and build to something unexpected. It was more about the journey than the destination, regardless of how pointless the journey was. Plus, Wiig and Cecily seemed to have a lot of fun playing off each other as evidenced by how Wiig looked like she was going to break. C-
Update was pretty uneven as Jost, Che and Pete got in some great material on Breitbart (hey, someone in mainstream comedy has to take them down), the Trump transition and Pence/Hamilton gate but none of their individual short form jokes worked at all and Willie just buried whatever momentum this Update may have still had. B-

Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade – This sketch was kinda lacking. They split too much of the focus between Mikey, Wiig and Bobby as baloons and Beck and Cecily bickering as a couple. Bobby as Pennywise and the Kristen Chenowith doll gag were funny but this sketch really failed to go anywhere. D+

Whiskers R We V - This is definitely something I shouldn't have been surprised they bought back with Wiig. Her mouthpiece in this sketch reminded me of her Clearbrite sketch from the 2008 Tim McGraw episode. Other than that and Bobby's walk on, nothing stood out to me. D+

Surprised Sue V - The only things that surprised me about Surprise Sue was that it was the final sketch of the night and that she really went from 0 to 60 in no time flat. D-

Now, for my updated rankings of this season...

1. Dave Chappelle/A Tribe Called Quest
2. Tom Hanks/Lady Gaga
3. Lin Manuel Miranda/Twenty One Pilots
4. Margot Robbie/The Weeknd
5. Emily Blunt/Bruno Mars
6. Kristen Wiig/The xx
7. Benedict Cumberbatch/Solange

Well, that was certainly unexpected any way you look at it. In two weeks, SNL returns from Thanksgiving break with Emma Stone returning to host for her third time. I think we can all agree what a strong host she was. Even if her first two shows weren’t filled with great material, she still performed the hell out of it and I think her great love and reverence for the show played a big part in that. I believe she can helm a great third show working with this rebuilt cast and writing staff. See you in two weeks!

Dave Chappelle/A Tribe Called Quest (11.12.2016)

Okay, here’s my review. The lineup for this episode alone was enough to put this episode on a fast track to becoming the best episode of the season, but the team effort and unprecedented historical context that it found itself in put it WAY over the top! Dave Chappelle and the cast all came together to prove they and SNL still have what it takes to reach us through the power of satire. Without missing a single comedic beat, they provided much needed relief, comfort and hope for tomorrow to a deeply divided nation that is frightened over an uncertain future. Once again in our lifetime, they showed us exactly why it’s okay to laugh in these types of moments in order to help get over such fear in the face of a national tragedy. Still, I don’t want to oversell it or anything so just judge for yourself. This episode was also consistently strong both in writing and performing even when the material wasn’t explicitly topical. The cast was a little uneven in terms of airtime tonight. We saw very little of Pete, Bobby, Cecily and Sasheer (more on why that’s actually strange for once at the end). We saw absolutely NONE of Melissa and for the first time Alex Moffat manager to get more screentime than Mikey Day (although they were still mostly in smaller, non-consequential roles that show is very little of who he really is). Plus, I think we may have hit the absolute all time record for most uncensored N-bombs and GD-bombs dropped (hey, let’s make sure the rest of us don’t let them get too “normalized” now) as well as instances of the host being caught visibly smoking on camera (and inside a pot Bloomberg era New York building no less) in a single episode. Anyway, without further ado…

Hallelujah – This cold open set the most appropriate tone possible for this episode. I seriously considered whether this episode would open with something as somber as what they followed events like 9/11 and the Sandy Hook/Paris shootings with and I honestly think they made the right call here. Given the mood of the country, they eased us into the rest of the show well. The nods to Leonard Cohen (RIP) and Kates' message at the end were quite touching. (not going to assign a letter grade to this because, obviously…)

Monologue - That was the best monologue done on SNL in at least twenty years. Dave Chappelle is still a stand up legend and it's great to see he still hasn't lost his touch. The Obama and White protest bits cracked me up in particular (hell, he’s the only person to make a truly funny and worthwhile Harambe reference EVER) and I liked that he chose to end on something poignant and thoughtful. My only complaints would be that I thought the Pulse/ISIS allegiance and pussy grabbing references weren’t in the absolute best taste (okay, I chucked at the former even if it felt a little misguided to me but the latter actually happened at my old school) but rather than split hairs on those two points I will leave well enough alone. A+

Election Night - The election night sketch was extremely well done, too and had hints of that classic Chappelle's Show style to it. Most of all, it was dead on with the way it accurately captured the raw panic of white culturally liberal America and put it a perspective of real historical racism. Chris Rock's appearance was icing on the cake. B+

Chappelle’s Walking Dead Show – This was a great tip of the hat to all the old Chappelle's Show fans out there tuning into see one of their comedic idols. I appreciate how he worked in all his funniest and most memorable characters and even introduced the sketch in the same way he introduced every segment on his old show. Lil Jon seemed pointless but the Player Haters gave me a laugh and I love how they chose to work in Clayton Bigsby in reasonably good taste (although he's admittedly low hanging fruit at this point). My only real complaint was that the ending w/Tyrone Biggums was a little too outlandish and silly. A-

Update may have taken a few extra seconds to get going but Jose and Che really did a great job addressing the ideological divide that ended up REALLY deciding the outcome of this election. Plus, the VERY loose vibe really added to this (especially when Che flubbed his Mexican/Puerto Rican) joke. If there was any time that we NEEDED a long form Update, it was this week. Kate made her best appearance yet as RBG and it's especially good to see HER of all people fired up right now. B+

Jheri’s Place/Inside SNL - I didn't know where the Inside SNL piece was going when it first started out but I'm glad to see they were breaking the fourth wall. The press conference was very funny and Dave, Kenan, Aidy and Leslie had the best lines. B+

Sheila Sovage VI - I didn't expect Dave Chappelle to be a host that warranted this sketch but if anything, his delivery really sold this one. Plus, all of Kenans' reactions really made this as well (although Bleach isn't supposed to be clear, last I checked). B+

Kids Talk Trump – This short film almost seemed like a direct ripoff of something Jimmy Kimmel would do (if he hadn't already) but went for something bigger with the addition of Dave and his daughter. Overall, it's short length was it's biggest drawback. It did get its intended laughs (albeit awkwardly) but it definitely felt like they could've done more with it because it already went a couple of different places. C+

Love And Leslie – This short film was something that sure started out poignant and revealing but then took a turn for the silly when it was revealed that she is dating Kyle (who's quite jealous of Colin) and she plans to take his virginity. Overall, this worked well from a few angles and I think the segments featuring Beck, Alex, Lorne and the anonymous page really added to this. Dave's cameo at the end really made this for me. A-

Football Party – This sketch revolving (seemingly entirely) around adult breastfeeding was funny enough and ambitious for what it was but overall it stretched it's main joke too thin to the point where everything felt too telegraphed. I will say they pulled out the exact right ending for this. I'm not totally against gross out humor or anything but this just felt too awkwardly executed. Plus, whole I realize Leslie is one of the shows' biggest draws right now, it may be cause for concern when SNL has a prominent black host like Chappelle and Sasheer has only one appearance all night at the end of the show. C-

Now, for my updated rankings on this season…

1. Dave Chappelle/A Tribe Called Quest
2. Tom Hanks/Lady Gaga
3. Lin Manuel Miranda/Twenty One Pilots
4. Margot Robbie/The Weeknd
5. Emily Blunt/Bruno Mars
6. Benedict Cumberbatch/Solange

Well, that was just what America needed plus just a little more. Next week, Kristen Wiig returns for her second hosting stint just before Thanksgiving. Yeah, that may be the second most disappointing piece of news I’ve heard this week but this point in human history should be all about finding whatever silver lining we can in the things going on around us. For instance, whether you love her or hate her, there’s no denying Kristen Wiig (and a few of her costars who are still on this show currently) were given the opportunity to become strong role models and action heroes to little girls everywhere who needed to look up to them this summer. Granted, the film was a little overhyped for its degree of success and what it turned out to be…but I’m choosing to give SNL credit for showcasing her once again if for no other reason than to remind those girls that even in Donald Trumps’ America, they can still aspire to be whatever they could possibly want to. Plus, compared to how recent her previous hosting stint was to her leaving the show, this would be a more appropriate time for her to come back. Also, the cast and writing staff have been rebuilt since she last hosted and they’ve produced an above average season thus far. Let’s hope they continue that trajectory next week. Stay strong and see you then!

Benedict Cumberbatch/Solange (11.12.2016)

Okay, here’s my review. There seemed to be a number of odd factors at play going into this show that ultimately made it the weakest episode of the season thus far (and quite possibly the weakest pre-election show in years). The presence of Benedict Cumberbatch certainly was one of them, but not for the reasons you might think. Cumberbatch was a hard host to get a read on. He didn’t display any burgeoning heretofore hidden sketch comedy talents but he certainly seemed like he cared just enough to be there and do his best in sketches. At the same time he didn’t seem to be giving 100%. It’s as if his performances were purposely meant to convey a lack of confidence in the material he was given. Even if the women were excited to work with him, it didn’t come through at all! It looked like even HE realized the writers couldn’t unanimously come together on how to best use Cumberbatch’s talents in their sketches. Host related issues aside, the writers more burnt out than they did BEFORE they got to take last week off. I don’t know if they were just burnt out on the election or if they just wanted this week to be over with so they could just get to working with Chappelle (!!!) already. Plus, it seemed like Beck, Kate, Kenan, Aidy Cecily and Vanessa were the only ones even in the studio tonight. Hell, the burnout on SNL can be sensed way outside the writers’ room as it seems the show has completely dropped off the face of the earth. It’s almost like everyone on the planet forgot the show even existed because they realized that this WASN’T the week Chappelle was hosting. Anyway, let’s break it down…shall we?

Outfront With Erin Burnett - The CNN cold open didn't exactly shatter my expectations at first, but they pretty accurately captured how the media was covering this election in the final stretch ending was very sweet and therapeutic. The Twitter/possible N-word tape jabs were a little predictable but were a highlight nonetheless. The FBI/Putin/KKK kissing gags were funny even if they were really telegraphed by the second one. C+

Monologue - Benedict didn't exactly instill a ton on confidence in the audience right out of the gate regarding his hosting abilities and the premise was a little thin. However, it was a good idea for them to make Leslie the main focus. Plus, the rest of the ladies looked pretty dammed hot. C-

Kohler Koohl Toilet - I wasn't crazy about the premise of the cool toilet when South Park did it four years ago, but the performances of Benedict and Mikey paired with the Dire Straits soundtrack really made this for me. I have a feeling Che/Kanin/Robinson wrote it, though. D+

Why Is Benedict Cumberbatch Hot? - Beck Bennett's game show sketch is the funniest live piece of the night so far. He really stood out but I really appreciated Benedicts' ease at poking fun at himself along with the whole "breaking the fourth wall" vibe. B+

Office Hours - I didn't think Pete's character from the JLD pool boy short needed to be recurring but kudos the writers for fleshing the hell out of Benedicts character (and him too for acting the hell out of it) plus Mikey's character was a nice touch. C-

Surprise Bachelorette Party – This seemed like it was going to be much funnier than it actually was. It really just dragged on without an ending but the performances were strong. Also, this was quite a strange sketch for the Cubs to make their cameo in. D+

Update was largely forgettable aside from the Carvey/Murray cameos (and even they seemed to be running on fumes). Plus, this was the spot where a Cubs cameo made slightly more sense. Aside from that, Che had a few great lines about the FBI/email/male birth control stories and I did like the way Jose tied together the opening rant. C+

Gemma And Ricky - I really didn't think they needed to bring back Cecily's Gemma character for a third time. That sketch only worked with The Rock and Louis CK. Benedict Cumberbatch was just an awkward fit and Vanessa really over acted here. I will say I liked the attempt at a magic trick and the endearing semi-ending. Plus, Cecily was definitely looking right here. D+

Criminal Mastermind – This sketch was something I didn't quite know what to make of. It seemed to take a little too long to get to where it was going. On the plus side, they knew the exact right spot to end it and this was the writers' best use of Benedict Cumberbatch all night. D+

Meeting Mr. Shaw - This bird sketch was one of the strangest things I've seen on SNL in recent memory. I appreciate when SNL tries to go that far outside the box and I can kind of see what this was going for but it just didn't quite land with me. I did get a kick out of them placing the bird/mannequin in the background of the goodnights. D+

Now, for my updated rankings for this season…

1. Tom Hanks/Lady Gaga
2. Lin Manuel Miranda/Twenty One Pilots
3. Emily Blunt/Bruno Mars
4. Margot Robbie/The Weeknd
5. Benedict Cumberbatch/Solange

Well, that was more of a disappointment than I ever could’ve expected it to be. Fortunately, we have the legendary Dave Chappelle hosting next week who (blatantly misreported recent stand up gigs and all) has to be the booking I have been looking forward to seeing on this show the absolute most in recent memory. I pray that the writers don’t continue in this slump, but I’m confident that Dave will work great with them and be able to bring the same spirit, dynamic energy and good will to the show that Tom Hanks did two weeks ago (hopefully, mixed with a little more urgency and palpable danger for good measure). See you then!

Tom Hanks/Lady Gaga (10.22.2016)

Okay, here’s my review. As expected, this turned out to be the best show of the season up to this point and Tom Hanks’ mere presence played a big part in that. He really sold everything he was in and it was pretty obvious from watching him that he really kept everyone’s spirits up all week. I say this because there was less palpable burn out visible this week compared to last week. We saw a lot of the female cast get plenty of airtime tonight but Bobby, Mikey and Alex were barely visible. Other than that, it was pretty balanced. Anyway, let’s get right into it.

Third Presidential Debate – This has to be my second favorite of the 2016 campaign. I like how it was much more focused than the previous week (since it was meant to parody a debate that occurred four days ago rather than nearly a week). Tom Hanks as Chris Wallace was very much a welcome addition. Kates' highlights were the "birth control/nasty women" riffs and describing Hillarys' last 30 years. Baldwins' highlights were the spinning out of control/rigged riffs and Stephen Baldwin jabs. B+

Monologue - This has to be Hanks' strongest monologue since at least 1992. It may have been something simple on paper but the writing was what really made it. B-

Black Jeopardy IV - This may have been the strongest installment of the series by default. Hanks really fit the "odd white man out" role well and got the audience on his side early. Plus, there was some pretty creative writing behind this and it's good to see Leslie fits the void left by Jay Pharroh well. My only real complaint is that the buildup felt like an eternity and the payoff just wasn't quite there. B-

Halloween Block Party - This was only worth seeing for the middle-of-the-road musical number. Plus, Melissa showcased a surprisingly decent natural singing voice. C-

Broken - This was something I didn't quite know what to make of mostly because I'm not terribly familiar with every single facet of the genre of show this is deconstructing. Plus, the main premise being CBS throwing every acclaimed streaming trope at the wall in an effort to win some awards with their new show kind of narrows the appeal of this. The biggest thing this had going for it was how well acted this was. C+

David S. Pumpkins - This had its moments but it mostly seemed like an inferior Halloween themed Kevin Roberts remake. The highlights were Leslie's appearance, the final Bobby/Mikey/Hanks scene and Becks' increasing confusion/frustration. Speaking of Mikey, I will go out on a limb here and guess that he wrote this. C+

Update was exactly as strong as the rest of the show. It seems as if they're phasing out long-form Update already in favor of the more traditional format in time for the post-election season, but this may have been the most intricately written series of Trump jabs this season. Leslie's commentary may be the single funniest and strongest thing she has done on the show so far. She may have been a little late with it but it was a clever and refreshing take on her summer scandal. Nothing really stood out to me from Cecily latest “Girl...Party” retread but I will say the timing of it is just about right. B-

Sully - This was possibly the strongest live piece of the night. Something about it made it feel like a '90s Era sketch. I don't know if it was the Baldwin/Hanks pairing (nice to see Baldwin in his first non-Trump appearance this season, BTW) or the more low-key focused style of writing, but whatever it was made it work. My only real complaint would be that the scene with Kyle and Vanessa felt a little too predictable. A-

A Girls' Halloween - This was another piece written in a similar low-key vibe but with much more female-centric humor. The thing I liked most about this was the stark contrast created by the interspersed editing of the 8pm/4am scenes. C+

America’s Funniest Pets - I didn't mind that they decided to bring this back from Adam Drivers’ January episode as I genuinely liked it then, too. Even though it felt like something that worked best as a one-off sketch, Kate and Cecily managed to bring back everything that made it work the first time and Hanks goofing on his pal Ron Howard also worked as a stark contrast to the ladies professional ennui. B-

Now, for my updated rankings of this season…

1. Tom Hanks/Lady Gaga
2. Lin Manuel Miranda/Twenty One Pilots
3. Margot Robbie/The Weeknd
4. Emily Blunt/Bruno Mars

Well, that was a strong way to close out a months’ worth of SNL episodes. Next week, Comedy Central will be airing the debut of Pete Davidsons’ new standup special “SMD”. I plan to tune in to this just to see how much of this set he did last year around this time when I went to see him at the comedy works in Denver. Next month, Benedict Cumberbatch makes his hosting debut. Given that this will be their last show BEFORE the election is over, this is certainly a case of odd timing. However, I’m holding out hope that Cumberbatch (like several other British actors who have hosted the show in recent years) will turn out to be quick at adapting to sketch comedy and turn in a surprisingly funny performance. See you next time!

Emily Blunt/Bruno Mars (10.15.2016)

Okay, here’s my review. This week, the lows were a bit lower and the highs just weren’t quite as high. Sadly, it appears that halfway through their third straight show, the staff may just be starting to feel the burnout from having to do four shows in a row. Emily Blunt proved to be an upbeat host with an infectious energy who was game for anything. It’s a shame that she was given an abundance of material that proved to be a challenge for her to save. I wouldn’t mind seeing her host again with some stronger writing. Good to see Moffat getting much more airtime, even if they are just using him in straight roles at this point. Good to see Vanessa and Bobby again if for no other reason than to prove to us they are still here. Melissa is still not getting enough airtime outside of smaller roles. Given her talent as an impressionist, it’s safe to say she is still not getting the chances she needs to show u her full potential. Other than that, the cast seems pretty evenly balanced. Anyway, let’s get started

Second Presidential Debate - This was serviceable. It felt like it wasn't as singularly focused on just the second debate as it was on working in every additional tidbit of election news but that worked too (even if it felt a little sloppy at times) since the actual second debate almost feels like old news now. Right out of the gate, Alex was miles ahead of Jon as Cooper and Cecily turned in a wonderfully committed performance as Martha Raddatz. Kate and Alec were great and they both played well off of Che, Leslie, Good Neighbor and Bobby as the undecided audience. Still, they could’ve done better with the whole Drumpf stalking Hillary bit. This time, Kates' Hillary stood out more and her "handed me the election" line plus the accusers/mistresses bit and the O Fortuna entrance made the whole sketch for me. C+

Monologue - If nothing else, this showed that Emily Blunt had the right energy and commitment to be the host. It was also nice that this had a bit more to it premise-wise than just another songologue. Pete, Kenan and Cecily had the best lines in this. C-

Escorts – This sketch had some awkward missteps to it. Even though it was Moffats' first major live performance, I think the blame should be shared pretty evenly between him, Leslie and Emily. I couldn't tell if Emily was trying to help or just jumped ahead by accident. Although this was an odd sketch for anyone to break, it was fun seeing Emily do so. I guess I would say the role playing bit stood out the most to me. Otherwise, it felt too long and awkwardly drawn out. Plus, it reminded me too much of that Russian mail order bride sketch from the '09 premiere with Hader, Forte, Armisen and Megan Fox. D+

Melanianade - It took me a minute to register that this was a months too late parody of Beyoncés' "Lemonade", but it was great for what it was even if they probably could've done more with it. This may be the most elaborate Kelly/Schnieder piece we have seen in a while. I questioned why they felt the need to cast Emily Blunt as Melania Drumpf until I noticed that Vanessa was cast as Tiffany which was actually pretty spot on given all the Miley comparisons from the convention. Plus, it was a nice way for them to work in Baldwins' Drumpf in a non-debate sketch. Overall, I guess this does prove Weird Als' old adage that you don't need to know the source material to find a parody funny. I wasn't terribly familiar with whatever track from Lemonade this was a parody of (if it was meant to be a genuine parody rather than just a Beyonce pastiche) but I found the jabs at Drumpf and his problems with women funny. B-

Film Festival - This sketch was the funniest piece of the night too me just for the sheer conceptual goofiness of it. My only real complaint about this is that it could’ve benefitted from some editing. It feels like something Alex Moffat may have written given how strangely fresh and sharp it felt. It's probably not Anderlette seeing how the only one of their tropes it has was Vanessa being the odd one out. B+

Chonk - This made me laugh for its sheer abruptness and how it used Bobby and Pete at the end. This had to have been written by one of the women. It seems to be making some larger statement on women's fashion that thankfully wasn't to overshadowed by how silly this was. C+

24k Magic - I usually don't comment on the musical performances buy Brunos' first performance was very fun visually. It looked like something better suited to an awards show performance than confined within the SNL stage. Part of me enjoyed the sprawl but part of me was a little bummed that they would think to do something like this and it wasn't Weird Al performing Tacky.

Update seems content to stick with the long form at least until the election is over, which is fine. Unfortunately, they already seem a bit too burnt out. Nothing about this week's two man rants aside from the rigged/Clinton/WikiLeaks jabs. Che actually does Drumpfs voice surprisingly well, by the way. The commentaries didn't add much either. Kates' Russian lady had a couple of good bus/bomb jokes and Vanessas' Disney reporter had some good jabs at Ken Bone and Billy Bush but that's about it. This was the weakest Update so far. C+

Burger King Drive Thru - This thing has to be the first example of sponsored content this season, but they really knew how to keep this going until it actually got funny (despite not being hilarious from the start). Emily, Bobby and Beck really stood out here. C-

The Sink – This was very strange and seemed to go nowhere. Thankfully, they knew where to end it. The only real laugh I got was Emily having the only credit.

Honda Robotics - This robot sketch doesn't seem to be going anywhere either but kudos to Mikey, Emily, Leslie, Beck and Kate for performing the hell out of it nonetheless. C-

Melania Moments III - Out of all three Melania Moments, I would rank this one somewhere in the middle. C+

PBS Great British Bake Off - This sketch doesn't seem to be anything more than a who-besides-the-host-can-do-the-best-British-accent-off with Cecily the clear winner but that didn't necessarily make it unwatchable. C+

Hamsters - This Virginia Woolf tinged sketch seems like a blatant rewrite of a similar Beck Bennett film that got cut from dress from the 2014 Charlize Theron episode. The only things the audience seemed to respond well to were the shoebox and baby hamster eating lines. Plus, the twist of Kyle and Aidy being in on the whole thing felt too tacked on. D+

Now, would be an appropriate time to start ranking these shows…

1. Margot Robbie/The Weekend
2. Lin-Manuel Miranda/Twenty One Pilots
3. Emily Blunt/Bruno Mars

Next week, legendary hosting alumni Tom Hanks returns for the first time in ten years to host the fourth straight show this season. I have no doubt he’ll be great himself but I sincerely hope that he can really boost morale and prevent the staff from getting to worn out. See you then.

Lin Manuel Miranda/Twenty One Pilots (10.8.2016)

Okay, here’s me review. Compared to last weeks’ show, the highs were higher but the lows weren’t quite as low. Of course with this being an election year (and still a particularly outlandish one at that) the topical material stood out the most. Lin Manuel Miranda proved to be a fun and energetic host when he was being used and his presence wasn’t being overshadowed by the news cycle that SNL was forcing itself to keep up with. As far as the cast goes, good to see Vanessa and Sasheer again (being used more to her own strengths and potential). Also, good to see them give Melissa some more airtime from last week even if we’re still not getting to see her full range quite yet. Alex Moffat is still someone who we haven’t seen break out yet and I still can’t get a handle otn what he brings to the show due to his lack of visibility. Anyway, let’s get down to it, shall we?

VP Debate/CNN Breaking News - The cold open was quite fun. Even though a lot of the material felt really telegraphed, it was just as cathartic as last weeks’ full length debate parody given what the actual election news turned out to be. Good to see they were able to cover as much of the VP debate as they absolutely needed to. Kudos to Melissa on getting the role as the moderator and her fourth-wall breaking moment was nice. Mikey and Beck played the Kaine and Pence roles well (although I thought they'd be switched). The CNN transition was great. Baldwin still does a very committed Trump and I’m still shocked that they were able to get away with saying “grab her by the pussy” unbleeped this early in the show. Kate still very much relishes the Hillary role and Cecily was a great foil to both of them. B+

Monolgue - Lin Manuel gave us a very fun, sprawling monologue, but I would’ve liked to have seen them throw in some cast member interactions just for good measure. He is actually quite a talented rapper now that I've seen him perform. This looked like it was going to set an exciting tone for the rest of the show but that didn’t quite pan out. B-

Campfire - This sketch is a poor follow up to both of the things that preceded it. I got a strong Anderlette vibe here. Kyle made me laugh and Kudos to Vanessa for getting in something so early on in the show after being completely shut out last week. D+

Crucible Cast Party – This was pretty much tailor made for someone with Lin Manuels' talents. He performed this well, but otherwise it had too much of a throwback vibe. The whole high school setting and the fact that it was another all-female cast music video made it feel like a leftover piece from 2014. The biggest laugh was Aidy looking around at all the flamboyantly gay boys who she assumed were into her. Speaking of Aidy, is anyone able to identify the extra who played the lights-on aunt in this? Didn’t she also play “Jean” in “Twin Bed” and the neighbor in “Back Home Ballers”? Is she perhaps a freidn or relative of Aidys’? C+

Substitute Teacher - This sketch was something I really started to like once I saw what they were going for (deconstructing all the tropes of a certain type of movie). Lin fit the role perfectly and Kenan, Mikey, Pete and Leslie scored some laughs and kudos to Sasheer for finally getting a decent part with some decent lines. C+

A Day Off With Kellyanne Conway - This was a very well written and directed short. I did like how Kate had to drop everything she did to defend increasingly ridiculous Trump tweets. B+

Update had a very strong start but seemed to lose momentum. I'm glad to see they had a plethora of material on the Trump tape and they really hit it out of the park. I'm also glad some more focus was given to individual jokes. It's nice to see they gave Pete his first commentary of the season. It didn't blow me away but it's nice to see some different material from Pete on how he is growing and maturing as a person. Hell, he almost made me forget that he’s still younger than me. The Tina/Jimmy Philly undecided voter commentary was all right but could've been edited down a bit for length. It didn't have a lot of focus and the only thing that was truly funny were the string of Pence comments and the subtle Trump/Fallon hair tussle jab. Also, what really threw me for a loop at the beginning was hearing the name “Denise McDonough” when Jost was introducing them. I was expecting Fallon to come out with Rachel Dratch by his side as I remembered that being the name of Dratchs’ “Zazu” character in their Boston teen’s sketches. It honestly took me about a minute to put together that he was doing this bit with Fey, not Dratch, and that they were doing Philladelphia accents, not Boston ones. Naturally, Tina did well with her accent while Jimmy struggled with his. I wonder if Tina, being from Philly herself, had to spend an inordinate amount of time coaching Fallon on the accent. B-

Wells Fargo Wagon – This was a clever way of addressing the Wells Fargo scandal even if it seems slightly like old news by now. Kyle had plenty of funny lines and Lin played another role well that was right up his alley. I have a feeling if Kelly and Schnieder didn’t write any of the Trump/Conway material in the pre-Update portion of the show, they probably wrote this. C+

Diego Calls His Mom - This was rather strange. A lot of the intended humor was lost on me since most of it was in Spanish, but it did have its moments of quirky, low key charm if you were willing to follow it. Since Alex Moffat was so heavily featured in this, I have a feeling he may have written it. D+

Stranger Things Season 2 Sneak Peek – This parody was okay. Even though I haven't watched Stranger Things (yet) and didn't get some of the more specific references to the show, the basic premise wasn't lost on me. Kenan, Leslie, Sasheer, Beck and Melissa all played their parts well. C+

Melania Moments II – This was much darker and funnier than last week. B-

A Degree Of Valor - This sketch felt strange. It reminded me a lot of a similar sketch from five seasons ago when Baldwin hosted the premiere but this had a feeling like Pete or Mikey or Robinson/Kanin could've written it. I did like Petes' sassy death at the end, though. C+

Since it’s still a little too soon to be ranking these shows, I’ll just start wrapping it up here. Next week, Emily Blunt makes her hosting debut. I pretty much have the same expectations for her as I did for Margo Robbie in that I may have only seen her in one movie but she seems like a strong enough actress to be a good fit for the show. See you then!

Margot Robbie/The Weeknd (10.1.2016)

Okay, here’s my review. This was the strongest season premiere since Hader and Sudekis were still in the cast. The show started out quite strong but slowly petered out after Update. The effect of adding several new writers can already be felt early on. Margot Robbie proved to be a game host who was up for anything. Unfortunately, the writers seemed almost afraid to use her in anything that didn’t focus on her great looks. Still, she was a fine host, if not a forgettable one. She could’ve benefitted from some better, more engaging material so I wouldn’t mind seeing her host again at some point. Mikey Day is fitting in quite well with the existing cast already and Alex Moffat is already starting to make some impression. Melissa Vilasenor was just barely more visible as Vanessa Bayer (who was virtually absent from all but the goodnights) but hopefully we’ll see more of her as the season progresses. Kyle and Sasheer weren’t in much either but there didn’t seem to be a lot of room for them this week. Other than that, the cast was pretty evenly balanced for airtime.

NBC 2016 Presidential Debate - The obligatory debate sketch was quite cathartic given what the real debate was like. Che did quite a good job as Lester Holt. It took me a second to recognize him under all that makeup but it's nice to see they're willing to use him in more sketches so far. Kate did fine as Hillary. Most of the Hillary stuff felt pretty run into the ground by this point, but I sure did like her Trump reactions, her opening tumble and the Bush-Dukakis/Carvey-Lovitz ’88 callback. It's clear Baldwin honed his Trump to near perfection and he had great material to go along with a much darker, more maniacal take on 2016’s unhinged Candidate Trump. This was the next best thing they could’ve done to having Anthony Atamanuik join the cast. To me, what particularly stood out were the mic/sniffing/Hannity/Chicago hell street moments. Sure, we could easily imagine this same material coming from Hammond had Tina not floated any ideas to Lorne but Baldwin did breathe new life into it, as expected. B+

Montage – This marks the first election year since 1992 that SNL did not change its opening credit sequence. Odd that they decided not to forgo doing that for this season but I can see why they didn’t necessarily need one.

Monologue - Fact checking was a pretty lame premise for a monologue but I have to give them credit since no one else would’ve thought of this and certainly none of us predicted it! I did like her brief digs at Lorne and Jared Leto. Thankfully, Margot didn't go it alone. The cast interactions were great and Kenan, Leslie and Pete stood out well. C+

Live Action 9 News Report – This was pretty creative and well detailed for a sketch that where the hosts' beauty was the center piece. I do like all the things they piled on to this. Again, Beck, Mikey, Kenan and Leslie performed this sketch the best. Kudos to Alex for getting a good role in his first show and kudos especially to Mikey Day for getting a role that suited him well in his first sketch. C+

The Librarian - This sketch was a great surreal piece that allowed the host to play against type and had more and more ridiculous reveals as it went on. Of Margot’s reveals, I liked the tattoos, the banana/lollipop gags, the snake tongue, killing Cecily and Becks’ sudden appearance. I also liked all the guys reactions being in tune with the Yello “Oh Yeah” song and it was a nice tribute for them to name the setting the “Villines Academy” after the member of the SNL family that recently passed away. I'm willing to bet one of the new writers came up with this. B-

Family Feud VI – This seemed like it had been beaten into the ground over the past three years but adding the election surrogate angle to it really helped. Hammond as Clinton was nice to see although his material was a little forgettable. Melissa made her debut with a great Sarah Silverman but she still seems underused compared to Alex and Mikey. Cecily playing Lin Manuel Miranda is a bizarre and savage move considering he is hosting next week. Really good to see they can still wring some laughs out of Larry David as Bernie after the convention. Kate did fine as KellyAnne Conway. Kate seemed miscast as Ivanka Drumpf. They're so different that I would've preferred to see Vanessa play her (especially since she has not been in the show at all so far). Still, she interacted well with Hammond as well as Mikey and Alex (who were perfectly cast as Eric Drumpf and Donald Jr). Moynihan is still funny as Christie and Beck did a serviceable Putin but could've been given a bigger part. B-

Update was great despite the election material being a mixed bag of original jokes and examples of "parallel thinking". Also, I appreciate the structure and format breaking of Update in that it was just two long stand up rants followed by two shorter jokes. Plus, I appreciate seeing Jost and Che appear looser with each other as it becomes more obvious that they built up quite a rapport. Cecilys' Cathy Anne character may not benefit as much as being confined to Update as say...Stefon or Drink Uncle but I do appreciate their effort to ground this character somewhat. The only thing this really succeeded in proving is that Anderlette are still employed with the show. Kenan Big Papillion had a couple of decent quips but overall this felt like more of the same. B-

The Hunch Bunch seemed a little long and a lot like something that spent a little too much time belaboring one joke. Still, I can say the payoff was funny enough. C-

Melania Moments – This was OK but way too short to be bookended on either end by commercial breaks. D+

NY Film Festival Women's Film Forum - This felt like it didn't know what type of sketch it wanted to be. It didn't work that well as an impression showcase or a Kate showcase but she got some genuine laughs out of it even if she gave me bad “Secret Word” flashbacks here. Also, Margot was still a little miscast as Keira Knightly here but not as badly as she was as Ivanka in the Family Feud sketch. C-

Mr. Robot - At first, I thought the only reason they would do a Mr. Robot sketch was Petes' uncanny resemblance to the shows' lead actor Rami Malek. Then, when Leslie came in I was pleasantly surprised they would go for a different angle and comment on Leslie's nude photos hack scandal. Finally, I ended up being disappointed with the sheer lack of focus and direction this had and the punchline being that Leslie somehow leaked her own nude photos from a comically outdated laptop. Still, I could see this as being too personal and devastating an issue for Leslie to really mine too much humor out of herself. Maybe if I were more familiar w/Mr Robot, I would've enjoyed this more but I can't even tell if the writers are that familiar with it either. C-

Well, SNL came back strong from an eventful summer. They made good user of the material that would still be topical by the time October rolled around. Next week, Lin Manuel Miranda makes his hosting debut fresh of his wildly successfully stint with his Broadway his “Hamilton”. Not being terribly familiar with his work myself, I only have the same expectations of him as host as I did Margot. Lin Manuel should prove to be a game and enthusiastic host but they still need to use him in all the right spots and give him strong material. See you then!

Fred Armisen/Courtney Barnett (5.21.2016)

Okay, here’s my review. I don’t know what else to say about this episode except that it was not nearly as bad as I expected it to be but it was just as strange and overall it was rather uneven. They seemed to have bought back all the recurring material it would have made sense for them to do given which of Freds’ previous castmates were actually available for a cameo and Fred put the exact style of comedy on display that we have all come to expect from him. It made for an odd show as he didn’t bring back his most overrated or obnoxious bits and this show had plenty of fun moments for those willing to look for them. Still, Freds’ brand of humor seems to clash with the stylings of this cast and he looked more and more like a product of his own time as the show went on. You’ll see what I mean.

Bernie And Hillary At The Bar - Glad to see Larry reprise his Bernie once more before the season ends. Most of the actual lines in the sketch seemed pretty ham fisted but I did enjoy the sprawling dance number that ended with Larry being thrown in the elevator. Also, it was nice to see Jon get in one at least one LFNY before his inevitable departure.  B+

Monologue - I like that Fred tried to get this off to a sincere start but the rest of the monolog seemed way too derivative of his later period pieces such as Tommy Palmese, Danish playhouse and his part in the high school theater announcements sketch from the Dane Cook/James Blunt episode. Plus it seemed to go on way too long. I did, however like his "impression" of Lorne and the audience interaction bit as one note as it was. C-

Lewis and Clark  - This sketch felt too much like a bad 13-14 sketch to really enjoy but Kyle was Allright in it and the Jon/Sasheer/especially Pete reactions made the sketch for me. D+

Digital Short: Finest Girl - It was nice to see Samberg return with another musical Digital Short and I liked that he was promoting "Popstar" (which genuinely looks funny) in character as Conner4Real, but this was something I didn't quite know what to make of. He really got all the mileage he could out of the premise and it only got funnier as Vanessa got more intensely into her Bin Laden assassination fetish. Plus, it reminded me quite a bit of Iran So Far. It was catchy as hell though. Still, I hope it's not actually featured in the movie. C+

Regine III - I'm real glad to see Jason Sudekis get some genuine applause for his second ever live cameo after leaving and I love how physically comitted he is as a performer, but I really wish he would'be come back for something, ANYTHING, besides Regine. That role, hell...that entire sketch in general was never right for him. Also, what does it say that Aidy did the most to utterly derail this sketch in terms of breaking? C-

Farewell Mr Bunting - This may actually be my all time favorite thing that made it to air in season 41. I loved the dry, dead serious, overly dramatic buildup to a well drawn out and we'll executed extreme gross out gag. This would've been right at home in the Paul Rudd/Beyonce episode from '08...but I mean that in a good way. A-

Update made a strong comeback from last week. Jost and Che had several strong jokes and I liked that they pretty much went all out with the audience. They really found a clever way to sneak Maya onto the show. Her bit was strange in that while it reminded me a lot of her previous characters such as Charo and Rebecca, it felt like she took a new (or at least slightly different approach) to doing those exact same characters. I don't think we need to see Willie again but I did appreciate how this installment took a darker, more insane turn. B+

Escape Pod - This sketch also had a big buildup but it didn't come close to paying off as well as Mr Bunting. Thankfully, it had a competent ending. C-

Theater Showcase IV - This had its moments. I normally don't have any problem with this sketch, but Fred is far too old to be playing the role of the high school drama student. I like how they worked Larry David into this but they could've got more mileage out of him here. Vanessa and Kenan had good reactions. I also liked the MJ/Prince jab, Becks' "nature-ology" line and Aidys' malaria bit. B-

Harkin Brothers Band - There was the obligatory Armisen fronted band sketch. I do like how they worked in Samberg, David, Sudekis, Rudolph and Brownstien along with literally the ENTIRE current cast but this ultimately went nowhere. There was nothing even resembling a joke anywhere here and felt like a much, much, much, MUCH inferior version of the Goodnight Saigon sketch from the Will Ferrell/Green Day finale. I actually liked Freds' band sketches from when he was actually in the cast than this. Hell, this didn't even look like it was that much fun for the live audience. It looked like they were running real short on time and had to cut way too much material from this. D-

Well, this season might have petered out a bit. Still, there’s hope as next season will take place during a presidential election season with no incumbent running. Let’s hope next season turns out more like ’00 or ’08 (or even ’12) rather than ’04 in terms of political material. I realize this election season has been so ridiculous that it is now beyond effective satire but I would still like to see SNL rise to the challenge. See you in September!

Drake (5.14.2016)

\Okay, here’s my review. Drake still has the abilities as host to elevate some of the weaker material and they certainly served him well here. This was a rather strange episode in that it was worse than some of the previous month or so worth of episodes (minus Russell Crowe) but no better or worse than Drakes previous episode. Sure, season 39 had its own multitiude of problems compared to now but I think this episodes biggest problem was that it relied more on repeated premises and unoriginal writing than some of the fresher episodes we’ve seen this season. Still, in both cases I think we can agree that Drake did the least to drag the show down. This show was just as consistent as last week but whereas last week’s show was consistently strong, this weeks was consistently uninspired. Anyway, let’s break it down.

Trump Tower – This cold open was a little awkward and underwhelming. I was expecting more John Barron jokes but I guess that's what update is for. Still, it was a good way to work in Bobbys' Christie and Jays' Carson and I did like the Zimmerman/Lil' Marco/Springstien/Lindsey jabs. C+

Monologue - This wasn't as good as his first one. The idea of an entire song devoted to memes seems lame and derivative but Drake is one of the few performers with the charisma to pull this off. I did chuckle as the memes became increasingly outlandish and I liked how they worked in Aidy and Jon. C+

Rent-A-Car - This sketch seemed strange but it was ultimately enjoyable. Jays' character really made the whole thing for me and Drakes' performance really added to this. Other than that, it seemed like a watered down rewrite of Ferrells' Dr. Beamer and every Maya Rudolph sketch ever. B-

American Ninja Warrior - This really telegraphed the hell out of its' main joke way too early but it was tailor made for a performer like Bobby. His physicality is what this was really all about. B-

Dennis Walls And The Cookies - This sketch was pretty one note but everyone really performed it well even if the central premise wore a bit thin. Still, I can’t entirely be mad at any sketch where Although I liked the Leslie and Kyle interaction, I don't see why this had to be set up as a PBS piece. B-

Baby Boss IV - I liked how they placed Beck's Baby Boss in a new setting (even though the tea party thing felt a little far-fetched) because it felt like a real early '90s throwback and they wrote much better material for Beck this time. B-

Update was really lacking in jokes (except for the Trump material and "Doe Vs Wade" was so stupid I had to chuckle at it). They really found a clever way to sneak Ilya Povlatsky into the show this week but nothing really stood out as new here. Leslie delivered a charming commentary even if it wasn't destined to be her most memorable. I liked Jay's commentary even though I knew exactly where it was going before he even came out. Still, I've seen him impersonate more comedians than rappers at this point so at least it was good to see him do some more impressions he hasn't used on the show yet. I liked his 50 Cent and Nicki Minaj but his T.I. still needs some work. Plus, having Drake come out at the end provided for a better ending. C+

Black Jeopardy III – This felt a little soon to bring back, but it was nice to see one where the third odd-one-out contestant was actually black and not white. Still, while Drake turned in a funny performance in this they could've done better than playing up his overall Canadianness. Plus, the Caitlin Jenner joke was really awkward and the Tyler Perry jab wasn't good enough to save it. C+

Drakes' Beef - This was funny. It allowed him to poke fun at his own image and managed to get laughs without be belaboring it's point. B-

Chaperone - This was a mess. Why were Drake and Taran both dressed exactly like Hollywood Hulk Hogan? This felt like it was going in several different direction and yet managed to repeat the same joke four times in the process. Plus David Spade did a much more coherent sketch 18 years ago where he played a chaperone named Shane. D+

Next week, Fred Armisen returns to host this season finale. This is the booking for this month I can definitely say I’ve been looking forward to the least. Fred is someone I never thought would be asked to host the show (it’s unclear what, if anything, he is promoting and given the lateness of the announcement of this month’s shows he must have been a last minute replacement for a host who dropped out unexpectedly) and I’d be hard pressed to immediately think of any of his recurring bits, characters or impressions that would fit in well with this current season or that the staff would be clamoring to use again. I just hope he decides to draw upon his earlier comedic inspirations than his later ones. As far as obligatory cast cameos, I’m hoping for something in the Forte/Hader/Samberg family than the Wiig/Rudolph/Seth family. Speaking of Samberg, I’m hoping this season doesn’t end up closing the way HIS first hosting gig closed out season 39 two years ago. I’m hoping this season finishes just as strong as it started in October…well, as strong as it REALLY got “started” once Morgan hosted. See you then!

Brie Larson/Alicia Keys (5.7.2016)

Okay, here’s my review. Brie Larson showed herself to be a game host who was up for anything. She blended in the cast maybe a little too well. Either that, or she was just placed in small straight and unmemorable roles that made her see, practically invisible the whole night. I’m going to go with the latter but she was a fine host who did well with what small roles she was given when she was actually put to some use. The show is still pretty consistent as far as writing and cast balance goes

Church Chat XIX - Great to see SNL actually surprise up with an out of nowhere Church Lady appearance (although since Carey has been plugging his "First Impressions" competition show and was just on Seth Meyers it might not be a TOTAL surprise). While the Madonna/Beyonce met gala jabs were weak the Jay-Z/Lemonade joke was Allright just for the reaction it got from the audience. While Tarans' increasingly weak Cruz didn't add much, Darrel as Trump really breathed some life into this and while the Cruz demon transformation was a nice touch, they really should'be done more with it that tacking onto the LFNY. It was nice of them to sneak JR in there even if it had to be his most useless role yet. While Vanessa and Kate got some chuckles, they may not have even needed to be in this. All in all, while this got off to a slow start it was nice to see this season and was much better than the one from Carveys' 2011 hosting gig. Plus, this one seemed to have a real 86-90 feel to it for some reason. Did anyone else get that vibe? B-

Monologue - Brie Larson seems like she is going to have fun as a host so far. Beck and Bobby got some laughs here but I don't see why they had to give us a much more rushed version of last years' Mother's Day monologue from Reese Witherspoons' show. C-

President Barbie  - This ad took a while to get going but as soon as I saw what they were going for, I noticed how dated these criticisms of Hillarys' campaign were. If it weren't for Brie Larsons' appearance as the mom, I would'be assumed this got cut from many earlier dress rehearsals this season. C-

Near Death Experience - I'm surprised they made the alien abduction sketch from Ryan Gosling show recurring, I wouldn't quite say we have another Debbie Downer on our hands just yet. The writing in this version was still up to snuff, but I still prefer the Gosling version at this point. Only Bobby seemed to Crack up mildly at first glance. B-

Baby Shower -This sketch was something I didn't quite know what to make of. It was really one note, but kudos to the hair people for pulling this off. The humor in this was largely lost on me not being a mom or having met the type of personality this sketch is meant to poke fun at. I have to wonder who wrote this. My guess would be any combination of Sublette/Kelly/Schneider. D+

Update has returned to form. Jost and Che had a string of great jokes. It was a little sooner to bring back Laura Parsons (even though I know it has been months) but she had her best material here. I liked Sasheers commentary for what it was. It was a little awkward and directionless but I'm glad to see she and Josh had fun with it and her dropping her own n-bomb really made this for me. I'm sure Lorne will have her back over this. Petes' commentary was also fun although it felt a little strange seeing her make two cameos in the same show. B+

Game Of Thrones - I think SNL may have been making a few too many returns to the Game of Thrones well but kudos to them for doing what may be their first ever LIVE Game Of Thrones parody ever. I do like how you didn't really have to have watched too much of the show to get it. C-

Quiz Show 2018 - This is another one note piece that got dragged on needlessly. I did like the Heidi Cruz reveal at the end but we maybe could've done without the "future" jokes. C+

Kickstarter  - I loved seeing Kyles' Chris character again. Brie and Beck played very well off of him. Besides the film clip and project description but otherwise this didn't have as many stand out moments as the previous installments. B-

Dead Bopz - I'm glad to see Dead Bopz make it to air after getting cut from dress rehearsal months ago. It was nice that they found a way to work Brie Larson into this. Sasheer, Aidy, Taran, Beck and Jay really stood out here.  B+

Well, that was fun. Next week, Drake returns to the SNL stage to pull double duty once again. As Drake had already proved himself to be a great host two seasons ago, I can say with some certainty that this is the May 2016 booking I have been genuinely looking forward to the most. See you then!
